Keels- Scales of the Saw-scaled Viper

Saw-scaled Vipers (Echis carinatus) are one of the ‘Big Four’ venomous snakes of India. These small, stout snakes have strongly keeled scales on their upper body. They derive the name, Saw-scale, due to the saw like sound they make by rubbing their scales when threatened. These keeled scales create a beautiful texture in a macro photograph.
